The 6th Melbourne Macro Policy Meeting
After a 4-year break the Macro Policy Meeting returned in 2024, with two distinguished keynote presenters from overseas joining us at the Melbourne Business School for our two-day event.
On the 24 - 25th of October, the Melbourne Institute co-hosted the sixth Melbourne Macro Policy Meeting with the Department of Economics. This meeting marked the return of an event that had been suspended for the previous four years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The event was well-attended with robust discussions ranging over various aspects of monetary and fiscal policies. The attendees included eminent economists from Australia and overseas, including China, Italy, the United States, Japan and New Zealand.
The keynote speakers were: Professor Shang-Jin Wei (Columbia University, USA) and Professor Efrem Castelnuovo (University of Padova, Italy).
Professor Shang-Jin Wei (Columbia University) speaking on “The Spill-back and Spillover Effects of US Monetary Policy: Evidence from Chinese Export Prices”
Professor Efrem Castelnuovo (University of Padova) speaking on “Households’ macroeconomic beliefs: the role of education”
This year’s theme for the panel discussion was “Managing Inflation in a Slow Growth Environment”. The moderator was Guy Debelle (University of Adelaide), and the panellists were: Sarah Hunter (Chief Economist and Assistant Governor (Economic) Reserve Bank of Australia); Adam Cagliarini (First Assistant Secretary, Australian Treasury); Catherine de Fontenay (Commissioner, Productivity Commission) and Paul Conway (Chief Economist and Director of Economics, Reserve Bank of New Zealand).
The Melbourne Institute and the Department of Economics would like to thank the Reserve Bank of Australia, The Treasury, the Australian Macroeconomics Society and the Australian National University for their generous support in making this event possible.
