Title: Same-Sex Role Models in Education: A Meta-analysis and a Super Study

Abstract: We provide evidence from a meta-analysis and a global super study highlighting that being assigned to a same-sex teacher has only very small effects on student performance. In our meta-analysis, we summarize main estimates from 28 studies and find an average role model effect on grades and test scores of 0.050 standard deviations (SD). In our super study, we analyze data from 1.6 million students in 90 countries and find an even smaller role model effect on test scores of 0.015 SD. Using the same data, we find larger role model effects for specialization intentions of 0.063 SD. These effects are concentrated in high-income and high gender-equality countries. Taken together, our results show that increasing the number of same-sex role models will not close performance gaps between girls and boys but may reduce sex segregation in educational and occupational choices.
