Title: Evaluation of the Adult Migrant English Program for the Australian Government Department of Home Affairs

Abstract:  The Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) is a free service to help eligible migrants and humanitarian entrants with low English levels to improve their English language skills and settle into Australia. In partnership with the Australian Government Department of Home Affairs, we have completed a longitudinal research study analysing the effectiveness of the AMEP. The study was conducted by researchers from the Telethon Kids Institute and The University of Western Australia and was supported by the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Children and Families over the Life Course [CE200100025].

Information held within the Australian Bureau of Statistics’ (ABS) Multi-Agency Data Integration Project (MADIP) was combined with records from 403,000 de-identified AMEP clients who participated in the AMEP from July 2003 to June 2019, and analysed via the secure ABS DataLab for this research study. We assessed the impact of AMEP attendance on a range of social and economic outcomes via linked Census, Taxation, and Income Support data in MADIP.

The research study consists of five research papers that were recently published on the Department of Home Affairs website, the highlights of which will be discussed in this talk.
