Title: New Approaches to Studying Migrant Fertility
Abstract: Research on fertility of international migrants in Europe is situated at the crossing of various research areas, i.e. social and family demography, family sociology, and migration sociology. With the growing numbers and shares of immigrant and ethnic minority populations in European countries, which are also undergoing profound population aging processes, the number of studies on migrant fertility has increased over the past three decades. The talk provides an overview about recent developments in analytical perspectives that complement the classic assimilation framework. A newer approach emphasizes migrants as emigrants and compares them to stayers in their countries of origin (dissimilation framework). The comparative integration context theory focuses on migrants in different countries of destination. Moreover, intersectional approaches have recently emerged and brought men into the study of migrant fertility. In the same line, social inequalities and cultural variation within and across migrant groups contribute to differences in their fertility. I will mainly draw on empirical research from Europe, but also include an empirical study on infertility among recent immigrants in Australia.
