Title: Medical Brain Drain: The Role of Job Attributes and Individual Traits
Abstract: We used a Discrete Choice Experiment to study job preferences of senior medical students from 12 Italian universities when moving abroad is an option. We found that the evaluations of most job attributes crucially depend on the job location. Also, subjects attaching a lower value to staying home have higher levels of academic abilities, altruism, risk tolerance and competitiveness, potentially harming the quality of remaining doctors and healthcare quality. Considering that doctors are highly mobile, our findings bear substantial implications for leveraging job design to mitigate the challenges posed by the medical brain drain
