Title:   Where to build new houses? Housing outcomes and labour market outcomes of residents of new housing supply

Abstract: A key policy issue, because of population growth and housing affordability concerns, is that urban cities require new housing supply. But where to build new housing? Using 2004-2018 administrative microdata on the entire Dutch population, our research is the first to provide a comprehensive overview of housing outcomes, commuting outcomes and labour market outcomes of individuals who move to new-builds in compact urban growth (CUG) neighbourhoods as compared to individuals who move to other new-builds in the period 2007-2012. Applying a difference-in-differences estimator on a coarsened exactly matched sample, we show that CUG-residents experience a faster growth in property values than residents in other new builds. We do not find differential effects between CUG-residents and other new build residents on the commuting distance and employment.
