Title: Cultural Integration in the Classroom: The Role of Parents and Teachers

Abstract:  The integration of ethnic minority students in the classroom could change the behaviors of ethnic majority students and their parents, as well as that of their teachers. Using random assignment of children to classrooms in Taiwanese middle schools, we show that exposure to Indigenous but not Hakka minorities lowers test scores of the ethnic majority students. These negative effects are primarily due to endogenous responses of parents and teachers rather than students' correlated characteristics or responses.
