Title: Flat White News? Measuring Political Slant of Australian Newspapers
co-authored by Ekaterina Volkova

Abstract:  We apply methods of natural language processing to quantify political slant of Australian newspapers using a corpus 20 million news articles from 2001-2020. By comparing the language of the news articles to the language of political speeches by Australian MPs we derive several measures of political slant for every newspaper in our sample in every point in time. These measures enable us to explore the potential effects of recent mergers & acquisitions in Australian media industry, such as the Nine-Fairfax merger and the acquisition of APN’s regional newspapers by News Corp.
