Title: The impact of school disruptions during the COVID-19 pandemic on parental labour supply and earnings in Australia

Authors: Nicolas Salamanca, Tanya Gupta, Irma Mooi-Reci and Mark Wooden

Abstract: One of the many interventions introduced by Australian governments in response to the COVID-19 pandemic was the suspension of in-person teaching by schools. This paper uses longitudinal data from the HILDA Survey spanning the period 2017 to 2021 to examine the impact of these restrictions on the labour supply decisions and earnings of parents. We use difference-in-differences and triple difference designs that exploit geographic and time variation in the incidence and duration school disruptions, as well as differences in the impact and relevance of school disruptions for essential and non-essential workers and for households without children.
