How is Economic Reform Achieved?

Big policy reforms that we now take for granted, like Medicare, HECS, tariffs and social security safety nets, did not happen overnight. In truth, they were years in the making, built by socialising ideas, winning community support and securing political champions.

Professor Beth Webster will explore common elements behind Australia’s most successful policies and what they can teach us about today’s economic challenges. She will examine how ideas gained traction, how support built across communities, and the effective transition arrangements critical to reform success.

Following her lecture, Professor Ross Garnaut AC will offer his reflections in response to Professor Webster's address. He will discuss the themes raised in the lecture and their relevance to Australia's current policy challenges.
