Abstract

Many Australians are experiencing mental distress as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly among the unemployed and those experiencing financial stress. This Research Insight looks at the impact of COVID-19 on Australians' mental health using data from the Melbourne Institute: Applied Economic & Social Research Taking the Pulse of the Nation survey and the 2017 HILDA Survey. Author, Peter Butterworth discusses the effectiveness of the newly introduced JobKeeper Payment and JobSeeker Allowance, and suggests ways the Australian government and policymakers can further ensure they remain ahead of the mental health curve.
