Duncan McVicar, Queen’s University Belfast - Zero Hours Contracts
Title: Zero Hours Contracts
Abstract: Zero Hours Contracts (ZHCs) are employment contracts where the employer does not guarantee the individual any work and, in some but not all cases, where the individual is not obliged to accept any work offered. They are interpretable as an extreme form of precarious work and have become increasingly prevalent in the UK.
In this seminar we’ll talk about the measurement of Zero Hours Contracts, the characteristics of Zero Hours Contract workers and jobs, and take a look at some preliminary estimates of the Zero Hours Contract wage penalty/premium and their association with workers’ health outcomes.
