Title: Correcting Erroneous Beliefs about Job Opportunities and Wages: A Field Experiment on Education Choices

Abstract: In a field-experimental setting, we provide students in randomly selected schools with information aimed at improving their knowledge about the job opportunities and hourly wages of their favorite occupations. We study whether the information corrects erroneous beliefs, shifts preferences and (in the future) influences education choices. Our results show that students have inaccurate beliefs. Providing information improves the accuracy of these beliefs, predominantly by correcting overestimations. Students who receive the information are more likely to change their a priori favorite occupation. If they do so, they generally substitute it for an occupation with better prospects.
