Key insights from December 2021

• Vaccine hesitancy at 9.6% compared to 11.5% two weeks prior.
• Australia close to 90% fully vaccinated, and our data suggest we might not achieve much more than this as the fall in hesitancy is slowing.
• Vaccine hesitancy continues to fall across all age groups and states.
• Hesitancy remains highest in Queensland at 14.2%, followed by WA with 12.2% and SA with 11.8%, and it’s lowest in Victoria at 7.3%.
• As Australia opens up whilst other countries in Europe lockdown, and with the new more transmissible Omicron variant, it is essential that the population receive boosters to enhance our protection. Recent data from the Taking the Pulse of the nation suggest 1 in 4 Australians are hesitant to receive COVID-19 vaccine boosters.

Methodology

These figures use data drawn from the Taking the Pulse of the Nation survey Melbourne Institute’s survey of Australians’ attitudes and behaviours on critical, economic and social issues. The survey is fielded every two weeks, and each survey wave contains responses from 1200 persons, aged 18 years and over. The sample is stratified by gender, age and location to be representative of the Australian population. The numbers report moving averages from the most recent two TTPN fortnightly waves.
